Revelation Bell

Having just returned from mudfest Greenbelt 97, the first thing I did (after a long soak in the bath) was listen to Iain Archer's latest offering. Because it's only 7 tracks long and one of them is a re-recording of an old song, I wasn't really expecting great fireworks in my brain after a single listen, but that's virtually what I got.
Slamming straight in there with the title track, Iain and band ring-ding-dinged their way into a totally new sound to any of their previous escapades. Even the live sets could almost be rivalled by this, with a song that grows on you more with each listen.
Another unexpected highlight was the all new Flat Earth, which in Mr Archer's own words has had "new life breathed into it", and compared with its first appearance on 1996's Crazy Bird the changes make it into something more like an epic.
Nothing to Remember is classic Archer, with his lilting vocals combined with sublime guitarmanship (and if there isn't such a word there will be after you listen to this CD!).
But my favouite track has to be Got me Gone. When cranked up loud the Rolling Stones bizarrely come to mind.
All the songs carry thought provoking lyrics that give clues to something deeper going on than your usual love song, although not really obviously Christian at first. But the secret to enjoying this mini-album properly is turning up the stereo, sitting back and letting your mind wander to the long summer days ahead, and you can't go wrong.
