Free..... A very early Iain Archer song heard at the Greenbelt Festival in 1992(?) when Iain was one half of The Vagabonds Of Love. A great tune, hinting at what was to come.
Take My Time..... A regular performance piece at the time of Playing Dead's release, this apparently failed to make it onto the album because it "wasn't serious enough" for the label. Admittedly, it's not a soul-searching lyric - more a creed for the terminally laid back - but as a demonstration of Iain's mastery of his instrument, it's replete with high speed riffs and a tremendous solo. The song appeared on Iain's early four track demo EP "Rain", which I'll review if I can ever get hold of a copy.
Climbin' Trees..... Appeared in the Greenbelt 96 sessions, but was missing from the newly released album, Crazy Bird. There were plans afoot that a live version would appear on a compilation album "Welcome To The New Acoustic Nation", which was subsequently shelved.
Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace..... OK, OK, so Iain didn't write this one all by himself, but he penned a new tune to the ancient prayer of St.Francis of Assisi which Margaret Thatcher so famously misappropriated all those years ago. For those accustomed to the traditional tune, this version takes a little getting used to, but it's new, it's different, and all the funky falsetto "yeah, yeah, yeah"s certainly liven it up! It was performed on the BBC's First Light programme, along with an acoustic band version of Ancient Drums.
Father Of Light..... One of his brother Paul's (of The Ghears) songs, this was performed in duet around 1998. It's a stomping celebratory tune with energy to spare. And it somehow metamorphosed into Kula Shaker's Govinder half way through for no apparent reason.
Wishing..... The song that opens Playing Dead, appears in a different version on the Greenbelt 25th Anniversary CD (Greenbelt.25 ICCCD27630 on ICC Records). No piano, no drums, just Iain's guitar and voice.
The Water Is Wide ....... On a BBC TV Sunday progamme around 1995, Iain played this traditional Scottish folksong (using the better known and less raunchy version of the lyrics!). A beautiful song, beautifully sung.
Don't Fish Me Out..... A rather downbeat song from 1998, which Iain still plays live from time to time. Laid back and moody, with a memorable chorus, "Days collide when our hearts don't".
One Move And You're Dead..... A car is stopped and a gun pointed at the occupants for no other reason than they were travelling along the "wrong" road in Northern Ireland - chilling, and based on a real incident.
Boulevard Montmartre At Night..... An uptempo acoustic number inspired by the Camille Pissaro painting in London's National Gallery.
End Of The Road..... Brilliant new song from 2000, with a blues/country feel and catchy chorus. This will almost certainly be a highlight of the forthcoming album.
Mirrorball Moon..... How would the moon feel if it were a disco mirrorball looking down on the Earth's dancefloor? Another country swing groove takes this offbeat concept to wonderful heights.
Boy Boy Boy..... A pacy rock number about rebellion which grows into a wall of sound in live gigs.
Holywood Sea Park..... Ballad contemplating the loss of a friend, set in an area of Belfast. Highly poetic and moving.
A Reasonable Mistake..... "If there's only one way to heaven, I think that I might be forgiven, If only for one split second, I thought it was you". A love song, unmistakably, but as usual with Iain's lyrics it's a cut above the ordinary.
Nothing At All..... A very new song, introspective and painful, dealing with themes of self-doubt, struggle and loss of faith.
Trail Of The Summer Jets..... Another song debuted on the recent tours, so new I can't even tell you what it's about!
